In 2022 we will continue to see the pandemic continue to play a major role in shaping beverage trends and growth in the cold vault category. We can also expect to see more emphasis on familiar flavors across different categories. COVID-19 is known to alter a person’s taste and smell, so we will see a shift in consumers seeking reassurance from recognizable and nostalgic flavors. These simple flavors will provide a sense of comfort to consumers as they continue to recover from sensory loss or changes related to the ongoing COVID-19 virus.

The ‘clean label’ trend will continue in 2022 as consumers are now more aware that consuming quality ingredients can impact health and wellness in positive ways. Beverages that are multifunctional will continue to grow this year, including those that support immunity, are affordable, and promote comfort or well-being. Beverage manufactures will look for more ways to incorporate functional ingredients into beverages, along with producing products sustainably. Adaptogens and collagen peptides are two trending functional ingredients to watch for. Adaptogens are natural herbal substances that help combat stress and fatigue.

RTD coffee and tea experienced growth from 2020 to 2021, and we expect to see continued growth in 2022. RTD Coffee and tea are two of the world’s oldest beverages that both provide functionality, de-stressing mechanisms and health benefits. Millennials started the “cold coffee is hot” trend, but as Generation Z is maturing, they are looking for more multifunctional benefits. Generation Z consumers are also seeking more innovation around plant-based and dairy-free beverages, as well as those with no artificial flavors, colors, or sweeteners. We expect these demands to evolve the RTD coffee and tea categories.
